| Mission Two - Salomons Core Euro Launch - Report by Eric Davies Oct 7th - 10th our base Guethary South West France. Faultless Ryan Air flights to Biarritz saw the "dangerous bros" Nigel Cross aka "Tin Tin" (Second Skin surf shop), Steve Andrew aka "Uncle Festa" (Fistral Surf Co), Sean Morgan aka "Jethro" (FSC), Guy Penwarden aka "Brian "Its only a puppet" Connelly" (Just Ass Water), Grant Winter aka "Grant Mitchell" (Ocean Sports) and myself, along with Jon Horton from Salomon Marketing all settling into some beers at Bar Basque, Guethary. Tuesday saw the swell coming up (Nigel had seen the programme and called it the "Salomon Boot Camp" and he was right! I woke the crew early and we were soon waxing up and installing fins by streetlights at Grand Plage Biarritz. It was high tide so we surfed the punchy left off the large boulder at the left end of the beach, with everyone finding the slot, this was followed by the mad rush for breakfast and the first presentation at Salomon theory school. The Spanish and French surf shop owners opted for the long lunch, not the Brits, we were soon suiting up at sunny Bidart, operating on very low tide banks, a shade off a close out, with Guy and Nigel making the best of it. Once again it was the rush for the next seminar session, cramming a baquette for lunch. This was the full S Core explanation, Salomon aims to enable shapers to make a lighter stronger board, using a hollow blank, "challenge on". School was over again and a pile of S Core powered boards were available for test from Simon Anderson, Eric Arakawa, Dave McCauley and Greg Weber (all were present except for Greg). Test beach was Cenitz Plage, "going off" at 4ft + glassy surf working off 3 banks/reefs, "we were in there", grabbing an S Core whenever possible. Everyone seemed impressed with their speed, I even relaunched my shortboarding career, testing and loving Simon Anderson's own S Core 6'8", couldn't get Nige out of the water, Jon Horton was pushing his "fat boy flyer". Totally knackered we sampled some top French "nose bag" 'n' wine. It seemed unreal to be casually chatting with the living legends of the shaping world. Guy and the big man "Simon Anderson", the thrusters inventor were jawing all night. Wednesday saw pissing rain and strengthening onshore wind, so a more leisurely breakfast and the last morning of Salomon "boot camp", wet suits and clothing presentations. The afternoon was spent chasing a wave, a tough call with every beach affected by the onshore wind, so Cotes des Basques hosted the crazy Brits slop hop comp, with Steve, Andrew and Nigel showing the way. Despite Guy's protests because we didn't visit the brothel "just over the boarder", the evening passed easily over a few drinks. Thursday dawned even stormier so we went searching again, sadly not enough time to get to Mundaka, where Kelly Slater was testing and competing on a S Core / Al Merrick board, which stoked the Salomon R&D team. Soon it was Ryan Air time, which they did on time, followed by the long haul home. Mission accomplished, got there, got a wave, got back, the "blue boards" a success. Next step, Salomon are testing 7'4" guns in Hawaii, hopefully longboards soon. | Summer Camp 6/7th September 2003 Summer Camp is being held at Sennen this year, dogs are allowed on the Seaview Campsite. The last British Longboard Union competition is on the same weekend, also at Sennen. So it will be a good social event to attend. Kids are welcome. British Longboard Club Championships The club champions are The Hotdoggers, so we get to host it. It was put out for the Woolacombe Longboarders to host, but they declined. I also put it out to the Shore Surf Club, but they also declined, due to unreliable surf. Finally the Royal Navy - Royal Marine's might not even be in the country. So the Welsh Longboard club and the Scarborough Malibu club agreed that we (The Hotdoggers) should host it at Saunton. This will be the competitions 4th contest since it was founded. It is planned for the 31st May, so if you want to be in a team, please let me know. Norm. Club Sponsors Second Skin, Salomon, Dudleys and Surfstation are the clubs main sponsors. Crystalight, Henty, VW, White Lion, Turbo Tunnel and Bic are part sponsors. End of Summer Ball Change of venue this year, White Lion, Braunton on the 15th November 2003, tickets available in August. Raffle prizes for the end of summer ball would be gratefully received. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Fancy Dress SAS Fundraiser Surf Competition - 15th November 2003 Format of which to be decided nearer the event, prizes for best and wackiest costumes. You got to put it on and keep it on for the competition for maximum points. Morocco 2nd March 2003 By the time you read this four club members will be sitting in the line up of a perfect point break in Morocco. Soaking up the sunshine in 18c warm water. If you want to check out Morocco you can see for yourself at the following website: www.morocsurf.com or alternatively visit our website and follow the links. The many pictures of Morocco in their photo gallery will wet your appetities. Hotdoggers Website and Photo Gallery To drag the club kicking and screaming into the whatever century we're in at the moment, the club now has a regularly updated website: www.hotdoggers.co.uk It really is rather good, and no longer purple, check it out for all sorts of information, offers, news, adverts and many many club related photos. At the moment we would like as many photos of you surfing as possible, because personally, no matter how attractive Ashley, Elliot, Norm and Eric are, I'm sick and tired of looking at their ugly mugs. You can either post them to Norm who will forward them onto me, or alternatively email them straight to me (hindleandy@hotmail.com), but please don't attach too many photos in one email, the telephone lines in North Devon just can't cope with that size email. Cheers Andy. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
